Dr. Thomas O. Binford is a Professor of Computer Science (Research) at
Stanford University in the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
where he has been since 1970. He has led the Robotics Laboratory for more
than a decade. The research program of the laboratory focusses on
Intelligent Systems for Computer Vision and Robotics. He is a co-director
of the Center for Automation and Manufacturing Science (CAMS) and a member
of the steering committee of SIMA, the Stanford Institute for
Manufacturing and Automation. Dr. Binford's research interests include:
intelligent systems for vision and inspection based on geometric modeling
and geometric reasoning; representation of geometry and the physical
world;  AI  in  manufacturing;  interpretation  of  images  as   surfaces;
segmentation of images into features; aggregation of features; stereo
vision; and applications of vision, especially inspection of integrated
circuits.

He originated the representation of shape by generalized
cylinders in 1971, based on generalized translational invariance.
He was a pioneer of
"structured light" depth ranging methods in 1970. He contributed to segmentation
of images with the Binford-Horn line finder in 1970.
With Nevatia, he has contributed to recognition of complex objects
based on indexing of subclasses of similar objects in a visual memory.
He contributed to model-based vision in the ACRONYM system.
He has contributed to
the generic interpretation of surfaces from line drawings and stereo images.

Dr. Binford was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
in the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 1967 to 1970.
He carried out research in artificial intelligence for computer vision,
especially representation of shape, interpretation of images,
edge finding, and LISP programming systems.

He received a PhD in Physics from the University of Wisconsin in 1965
in experimental elementary particle physics
where he investigated charge independence in hyperon production and
Regge-pole phenomenology in elastic scattering.
Dr. Binford held a Fulbright Fellowship at the Tata Institute of Fundamental
Research, Bombay, India during 1965-1966, where he extended that research
in partial wave analysis of hyperon production by pions.
He holds a BS in physics from Pennsylvania State University in 1957.
